| On December 30, Mike joined with his friends Radka and Chris for a backcountry ski day at Mt. Rainier. They skinned up the Edith Creek Basin outside Paradise, breaking trail much of the way. The weather was fantastic, the snow ever better, and it was an outstanding day in the mountains! | |
| On November 27, Mike and Cheri้ skinned up the Alpental Valley in the beauty of a snowy backcountry. Dodging tree bombs, and enduring narrow trails and tree skiing on the ski down, they had a fantastic day followed up by an early dinner at the brewpub! | |
| On November 20, Mike and Cheri้ took advantage of the early season snowfall and skinned up to Panorama Point, at Mt. Rainier. The skin up was routine, but at Pan Point the two were blasted by a stiff cold breeze. Frozen fingers from one of us resulted in a ski down in fresh fluffy pow! It was a fun early ski day! | |
| On November 6, Mike and Cheri้ took advantage of some marginal weather, and escaped east to the Teanaway area, for a scramble up Iron Peak. Normally mostly trail, the two enjoyed snow and a bit of route finding. They polished off the peak in time to get back to the rainy side and burgers at the brew pub! | |
| In mid-September, Mike and Cheri้ joined with good friends Cebe, David, Heike and Sarah, for a 4 day backpack through the Eagle Cap wilderness, in northeast Oregon. The group was dodging the rain, and ended up in Paradise! Their basecamp was at beautiful Horseshoe Lake, on granite slabs. On day 3 they climbed Eagle Cap (9,573'), the 13th highest peak in Oregon (trail to the top!). In addition, the photography was incredible! It was a fantastic vacation, and a place to where we will return some day! | |
| On August 25, Mike played hooky from work (an act that Annie called "very irresponsible"!), and repeated his August 7 epic climb of Sahale Mountain. This time he went back for the views, which were spectacular! The group of Doug (the only repeater), Isabel (graduating from the basic class), Ian, Carry and Radka completed this delightful climb in 13 hours, and with spectacular views all around. Here are pictures of the scenery we missed only a couple of weeks prior! | |
| On August 21, Mike and Cheri้ enjoyed spectacular wild flowers in a hike through Spray Park, on the NW section of Mt. Rainer. They approached Spray Park via Knapsack Pass, avoiding the throngs of hikers. They headed to Echo Rock, with thoughts of climbing it, but turned around when clouds and light rain hit high on Rainer. They then headed down to the wild flowers and beauty. They even saw a bear and two cubs! It was a delightful day! | |
| On August 7, Mike and Cheri้ led their climbing sig group up Sahale Mtn. Mike had climbed Sahale 4 times before. It is in a beautiful area, with spectacular views. But the views were no where to be seen this day, in what was an almost epic climb! During the almost 17 hours (car to car) of this climb, the group of 9 enjoyed fog, drizzle, rain, white out conditions, wind, and cold. A GPS safely guided them to the Sahale-Boston col, across a cravassed Quien Sabe glacier. From there, they ran a short ridge to the summit during rain, wind and cold. A rappel deposited the group on the Sahale Glacier, where steep difficult snow awaited them. Finally, they returned to the cars in the dark! This was quite the mountaineering adventure! | |
| On July 16-18, Mike lead a Mountaineer climb of Ruth Mountain and Icy Peak. Both mountains are east of Mt. Shuksan, in the North Cascades. This climb focused on photography, and all climbers brought out the big guns . . . i.e., the heavy cameras! Basecamp was in the shadow of the east face of Shuksan, and the seldom attempted Price glacier. The weather was perfect, the photography enjoyable and the climbing group fun! Here are the pictures! | |
| Over the 4th of July weekend, while Cheri้ was on an Alaskan cruise with her family, Mike joined good friends for a climb on Little Tahoma. Little T, the protrusion on the NE side of Mt. Rainier, is a somewhat technical glacier climb of the 3rd highest peak in Washington (11,138'). The hike to basecamp was in mixed weather, but summit day brought sunny skies, while Seattle was socked in under the cloud layer. This was Mike's 2nd time on top of Little T, and just as good and fun as the first time! | |
| On June 25-27, Mike joined good friend Steve Mck, as well as 8 other Mountaineers, for a 3 day climb of Mt. Anderson, in the Olympics. The long weekend started with a 5 1/2 mile mountain bike "ride" where the group walked their bikes about 75% of the time! Then a 10 mile hike to basecamp. Summit day was a delightful 14 hour buttkicking, up two passes, to the summit of one of the more remote peaks in the Olympics. The 360˚ views from the summit on the warm sunny day were spectacular. After a second night at basecamp, which was just across the river from 3 of the biggest black bears Mike had ever seen, the group hiked out. It was great to get out! | |
| On April 24-25, Mike and Cheri้ joined with Cebe and others to teach rock climbing to their sig climbing group, in Leavenworth. For the third year in a row, the group met in Leavenworth, and climbed all day Saturday and Sunday. Many of our instructors were last year's students. On Saturday night, as in the past, all stayed in a huge Leavenworth house, and enjoyed a potluck dinner and breakfast (with Mike making waffles!). Everyone had a great time! | |

On March 20, the first day of Spring, Mike, Cheri้, Cebe, Ian, Greg and Bill hiked Mt. Pilchuck. It was a glorious day, and better yet, the first outing for Mike after his back surgery! Yippee!! Back to life!!!! |
