First Ski Day!

On December 2, Mike and Cherié joined their friends Lachovia and Jeremy for an excellent day of skiing at Stevens Pass.  The weather was sunny, the snow good, and it was an excellent start to the ski season!

Long Beach

After a wonderful Thanksgiving at Cherié's parents, Mike and Cherié spent the weekend at Long Beach, WA, at John and Julie's beach cabin. Un-Novemberlike clear weather greeted them to the beach, where they enjoyed hiking, reading, puzzles and great food!   It was a very nice get-away weekend.

Mazama Weekend

On October 27-29, Cherié, Mike, Dawn, Chuck, Susan and Sean spent the weekend at the Rock 'n River chalet in Mazama.  They mountain biked, played games, ate well, and enjoyed the brilliant fall colors. Cherié and Mike were also able to visit their friends Marcia & Jim in Winthrop, and Lachovia & Jeremy in Leavenworth.  It was a fun filled weekend!!

Mt. Worthington

On October 22, Mike, Cebe and Steve climbed Mt. Worthington.  The remnants of last weeks flu kept Mike about 900' below the summit, while Steve and Cebe signed the summit register.  It was a glorious day, made even "funner" by the bushwacking to the top.  But, this was to be expected, as it is a rare day that Cebe "Bushwack" Wallace fails to find the fun route!

Dungeness Spit

On September 30 - October 1, Mike and Cherié spent the weekend in Port Townsend (never stay at the PT Tides Inn!!) to celebrate Cherié's birthday and their wedding anniversary.  On Saturday they hiked to the end of the Dungeness Spit, toured the lighthouse, and enjoyed the wildlife.  It was a fun and romantic weekend!

Blanca Lake

On September 23, on MaryR's recommendation, Mike, Cherié and Annie hiked the 4 miles to Blanca Lake.  After starting through the tall trees, they eventually came to a pass abundant with blueberries.  After enjoying their fill, they descended to Blanca Lake, aqua green with the run off of the small Columbia Basin, and surrounded by Columbia Peak, Monte Cristo and Kyes Peak.   An easy hike back completed a great day!

Mt. Pugh

On September 16, Mike and Cherié led a Mountaineer scramble of Mt. Pugh.   After about 1 hours, the bee's attacked!  They knocked out 3 of the group, and 6 brave souls continued, despite Pete's b-level humor!  As it turned out, the group made it to within 800 feet of the summit before slick, snow covered ledges turned them back. Despite the bee attack, it was a fun day!

Olympic Traverse

On September 1-4, Mike, Cherié, Susan and Sean hiked the trail to Royal Basin, then left the trail and traversed to Deception Basin, climbed Mt. Hal Foss, traversed game trails to Heather Creek, then up and over the ridge to Sunnybrook Meadows, finally reaching another trail, which took them back to the cars.  For 4 days they saw many more marmots than people, and had a delightful, but physically strenuous 4 day trip.

Cape Alava

On August 25-27, Mike, Cherié and Annie joined with friends Aidan, Katie, Brad, Lauren, Katherine, Megan and Emily, and backpacked the 3 miles to one of their favorite places, Cape Alava on the Washington coast. The weather was fantastic, the water warm (kind of), and the food excellent! Mike, Cherié and Brad especially enjoyed the company of 7 wacky teenage girls!!

Sloan Peak

On August 19-20, Mike and Steve led a basic climb of Sloan Peak.  The beautiful weekend started with a fun wade of the Sauk River, where Mike played "chase the Teva."  After a leisurely hike to high camp, they left for the summit at 5am, crossed the crevassed Sloan Glacier, and headed up an often delightfully exposed rock scramble to the summit.  The views were as spectacular as the descent!

Tolmie Peak

On August 12, Mike and Annie hiked the trail to Tolmie Peak, near Mt. Rainier.  It was a wonderful day, even though the Mountain was obscured by clouds.   At the top they enjoyed a lunch of cheese, sausage and bread!

Mt. Stuart

On July 14-16, Cherié, Cebe, Mark, Priscilla, Grace and Ken climbed the West Ridge of Mt. Stuart.  A leisurely hike into base camp at Ingalls Creek was followed by a day of epic proportions!  The climbers left camp at 4am, climbed all day and evening, and finally reached the summit at 9,470'.  But the day was late, and they enjoyed a forced bivy at about 6,800' at 12:30 am.  They returned, a tad tired, to base camp the next day, and to their warm, soft beds that evening!

Labyrinth Mtn

On July 15, while Cherié was climbing Mt. Stuart, Mike and Annie scrambled up Labyrinth Mtn, near Stevens Pass.  A delightfully steep trail took them to picturesque Minotaur Lake.  Above the lake they entered a beautiful subalpine area, opening up views of the surrounding peaks.   A post climb dinner at Gustavs in Leavenworth, and, of course, ice cream, capped off an excellent day in the mountains!

Little Tahoma

On July 8-9, Mike and Cherié climbed Little Tahoma, the 11,138' peak next to Mt. Rainier.  Also along were 10 strong Mountaineers, many of whom were in the mentor group. After a pleasant hike into base camp at Meany Crest, they arose on Sunday at 1:30am, and started across the Frying Pan Glacier at 3am.  By 9am everyone stood on the summit. A post climb Mexican dinner topped off an excellent weekend!

Alta Mountain

On July 4, Mike and Cherié celebrated Independence Day by climbing Alta Mountain, near Snoqualmie Pass.   The Rachel Lake trail to the start of the easy scramble included many beautiful waterfalls.  Above the lake the wildflowers kept their minds off the about 6 false summits, on a beautiful day in the mountains.

Mt. Lena

On June 17, Mike, Ian, Peter, Mark and David scrambled up Lena Mountain in the Olympics.  A long hike took them to Upper Lena Lake, then an ascent of the snow and scree slopes of Lena Mountain took them to the summit.  The views were mostly obscured by clouds, and rain fell during the descent, but they all had fond memories of their 16 mile roundtrip 5300' gain day!

River Rafting

On June 10, Cherié, Annie and Mike joined friends Lachovia and Jeremy for a wild rafting trip down the Wenatchee with Orion Expeditions.  The river was at a perfect level for exciting waves and much drenching.  They paddled hard, but not necessarily "together!"

Mt. Wow

On June 7 Mike took a much needed mental sanity day from work, and climbed Mt. Wow, near Mt. Rainier.  The "Wow" is Native American for fox, but could also be for the spectacular scenery.   After a steep ascent the summit, as well as the group, was fantastic!

Mt. Roosevelt

On June 3, while Cherié was teaching Crevasse Rescue at Mt. Rainier, Mike lead a Mountaineer scramble of Mt. Roosevelt.  Unfortunately dangerous unconsolidated snow on a 50˚ slope 100' below the summit kept them from the true summit.  But it was a great outing on a nice day with lots of exercise!

Whitehorse Mtn

On May 14, while Cherié was climbing Yellow Jacket Tower, a rock climb near Leavenworth, Mike climbed Whitehorse Mountain, near Darrington.  Mike's climb took over 16 hours, and about 6,800' in vertical gain!  Mike even took his new camera to capture many of these pictures! Mike took a well deserved day off on Monday!

Tiger Mountain

On May 3, 2006, Mike and Cherié had a fun jaunt up Tiger Mountain on a beautiful evening, with their friends, David and Heike.  Afterwards, Extreme Pizza hit the spot!

Tatoosh Outing

On April 29-30, Mike and Cherié took the mentor group to the Tatoosh Range, south of Mt. Rainier.  After a pleasant hike (with heavy packs), they set up tents.  Then the blizzard hit!  Cold, windy and snowy.  But, on Sunday it was worth it . . . sun and snow, above the clouds!  Avy danger kept them off of the summit, but it was a great weekend.

Tulip Festival

On April 22, Mike, Cherié and Annie toured the tulips in Skagit County, then hiked 5 miles round trip to a viewpoint off Chuckanut Drive near Bellingham.  It was a very colorful day, followed by good exercise!

Mailbox Peak

On April 15 Cherié and Mike climbed Mailbox Peak as a conditioner. The day started out partly cloudy, but as they climbed, they encountered snow, and then blizzard conditions with 50 mph winds and blinding, blowing snow.  To Mike's joy, it was full conditions! Despite (or because of) the adverse conditions, they had fun!

Wallace Falls

On April 8, Mike, Cherié and Annie braved the wet weather, and hiked to Wallace Falls.   The round trip was about 5 1/2 miles, and 1500' elevation gain, for a fun and good exercise day!

Mt. Erie Rock 2

On April 2, Mike and Cherié taught at Rock 2 for the basic climbing course. Rock 2 is at Mt. Erie, near Anacortes.  The weather was fabulous, and friends abundant!

Jim Hill Mountain
Ski Tour

On March 31, 2006, Mike and Ian attempted to skin up Jim Hill Mountain, and descend by skis/snowboard. After 1000' the bushwacking looked daunting, and they chose instead to ski a clearcut with small trees. The snow was very heavy, and Mike spent more time on his back than on his skis!  A fun day of good exercise.
